Fortress walk

Stories of defense in the heart of ’s-Hertogenbosch

For seven centuries, ‘s-Hertogenbosch was a fortified city. Thick walls protected the city against enemies and the water. This defensive function is still visible today, for example in Het Bossche Broek—once a field of fire, now a unique nature reserve. During a fortress walk with a city guide from Kring Vrienden van ‘s-Hertogenbosch, you’ll relive the exciting history of battle and ingenuity.

The guide takes you along old city walls and tells you about bows and arrows, cannons, and clever water defenses. You’ll hear the story of the siege of 1629, when Frederick Henry managed to conquer the city. A visit to the Bastionder, featuring a short film and the impressive medieval cannon ‘De Boze Griet’, makes the past tangible. It’s no wonder ‘s-Hertogenbosch was named Fortress City of Europe in 2005!
