‘s-Hertogenbosch is known for its large squares and wide shopping streets, but the city also has narrow alleyways full of history. The alleyway walk by Kring Vrienden van ‘s-Hertogenbosch starts at the Kruisbroedershof and takes you through the Vughtereinde, an old working-class neighborhood with idyllic, hidden spots like the Tilmanshofje. This charming courtyard is tucked away behind the Parklaan and contains colonial houses where staff of a wealthy family once lived.

Along the way, you’ll discover alleys with unique names like Achter de Kan and Achter het Fortuintje, which refer to the past. For example, linen was laid out to dry in the Bleekerstraat, and some alleys housed ‘water and fire’ shops where local residents bought hot water and coals.

The walk also shows the characteristic ‘cameren’, small one-room houses where families used to live. Many of these historic homes have since been renovated.

After the walk, you can relax at Restaurant Bolwerk Sint-Jan with a drink and two warm snacks (meat or veggie). A surprising voyage of discovery through the unknown sides of ‘s-Hertogenbosch!
