Carolus Walk

150 years of Sisters of Charity of St. Charles Borromeo in 's-Hertogenbosch – the story of four hospitals

In 2026, it will be exactly 150 years since five sisters of the Holy Charles Borromeo arrived from Trier at the ‘s-Hertogenbosch station. At the invitation of Bishop Zwijsen, they came to the city to improve healthcare. What began in an asylum on Jan Heinsstraat quickly grew into a major role in several hospitals across the city.

During this special city walk, you’ll discover the story of the four hospitals that ‘s-Hertogenbosch was home to in the last century. For a long time, care was provided by religious orders: sisters, brothers, and later also Protestant caregivers. As a result, the city had a remarkably large number of modern hospitals for that time. The buildings were iconic landmarks in the cityscape, as were the sisters and brothers in habits who worked there every day.

We walk past former hospitals, convents, and places where healthcare in Den Bosch developed. Two of the monumental hospital buildings can still be recognized in the city today. We also discuss how the four hospitals eventually merged into the current Jeroen Bosch Hospital and how religious life slowly disappeared from the streets.

The walk shows how many traces this history has left behind. Many locals have worked there, were cared for there, or still visit buildings every day that once belonged to a convent or hospital.

To mark the 150th anniversary, we are bringing this story back to life with a special Carolus Walk through the city center.
