Every first Saturday of the month, you can book a "tower climb special" with Kring Vrienden van 's-Hertogenbosch. At 15:45 you start with a regular climb to the sixth floor with the gigantic clockwork. Meanwhile, on each floor you will get a good story about the construction of the tower, the playing drum, the old clockwork and the imposing bells. And of course intertwined with more great anecdotes about the imposing Sint-Jan's tower told by the guide. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with the spectacular view of the historic city centre and beyond.
After you peer out, the tower guide will take you back down, back to the exhibition floor. If all goes well, you would have seen ropes hanging on the way up. Whereas people used to ring all the bells manually, of course, the bells are now mechanically powered. For this activity, adjustments were actually made to the church tower during the restoration. As a result, it is now possible to disconnect the designated bells and put them on separate ropes so that they can be rung manually. This takes some preparation and therefore takes place at the end of the afternoon. In preparation for this 'tower climb special', the tower guide and carillonneur have already manually transferred the ropes to the bells they will ring before the climb. The guide then invites some visitors to give him/her a hand.
This way, a larger audience can learn about the magic behind bell ringing and a piece of history of the famous Sint-Jan's tower. Would you like to experience ringing the bells yourself? Then book your tickets now below. Be quick as it is only once a month and the group size is a maximum of 12 people.
