Witness to a rich history
What do King Willem-Alexander and painter Hieronymus Bosch have in common? They were or are members of the Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap, an ecumenical society founded in 1318. The members, also known as Swan Brothers, have owned their own house on Hinthamerstraat since 1483. The guide from Kring Vrienden van ‘s-Hertogenbosch will take you inside.
Art and history in the Zwanenbroedershuis
In this neo-Gothic building, you will find unique artworks, fifteenth-century music books, and even the drinking cup of William of Orange. The Brotherhood became increasingly influential: today, King Willem-Alexander, Princess Beatrix, and Princess Irene are also members.
Where does the name ‘Swan Brother’ come from?
In the past, members enjoyed elaborate banquets – with swan meat on the menu! Thus, ‘Swan Brother’ became a title of honor for influential individuals. Discover this unique story for yourself during a visit.
