Liberation Walk

During this city walk, you’ll go back to the final years of the war and the liberation of ’s-Hertogenbosch in October 1944. Together with a guide, you’ll walk past places in the city center where the Second World War is still visible and tangible. Stories of resistance, persecution, bombings, and liberation bring history to life.

The route starts at the station, where the war left deep scars. This is where transports departed, fighting took place, and the city suffered major damage during the liberation. Via ’t Zand and the area around Oranje Nassaulaan, you’ll walk past spots where residents were arrested or forced into hiding. Along the way, you will also see stumbling stones (Stolpersteine) commemorating Den Bosch residents who never returned.

The walk continues toward the Mariënburg monastery and Vughterstraat, where the liberators were welcomed in 1944 and the relief was immense. In the city center, you’ll hear stories about daily life during the occupation, about brave resistance fighters, and about the tension in the days surrounding the liberation.

The tour ends at the Markt, by the war memorials around the City Hall. Here, we reflect on the consequences of the war and the importance of freedom, then and now.

This walk is interesting for anyone who wants to know more about the city’s history during World War II and the events surrounding the liberation of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
