Back to the time of the Industrial Revolution
You can still find plenty of industrial heritage in the center of Den Bosch. Machines used to run at full speed here; today, these buildings have been given surprising new purposes. Yet, the original function is often still clearly visible. An enthusiastic guide from Kring Vrienden van ‘s-Hertogenbosch will tell you all about it on this fascinating walking route and take you back to the time of the Industrial Revolution.
Industry in Den Bosch
’s-Hertogenbosch does not have a clear industrial character. This can partly be explained by the fact that the city used to be a fortified city. Within the city walls, there were many forms of industry and craft businesses linked to trade, but there was simply no room for large-scale industry. After the lifting of the fortress status in 1874 and the Inundation Act a few years later, more opportunities arose.
Room for growth
The city decided on major infrastructural works, such as raising the area to the west of the city center. This made more space available for large-scale companies. However, this only happened in the late 1800s and early 1900s; as a result, the city was unable to benefit from the momentum of the Industrial Revolution like Tilburg, Eindhoven, and Breda.
Monuments of industry and technology
Nevertheless, plenty of companies established themselves in the business park of the ‘t Zand district. During this walk, we pass various monuments of industry and technology, and in some cases, we can even see the interior. The walk ends at the impressive roof of the station; a fine example of a steel construction from that period.
