Mariënburg Campus

From monastery complex to academic center

In the heart of the historic Uilenburg district in Den Bosch lies an idyllic little park. It belongs to the former Mariënburg monastery. The facade is imposing and centuries-old – but don’t be fooled: today, it houses students who are contributing to our digital future!

Education in the monastery

The current chapel and monastery building date back to 1897/1899. The Sisters of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (known as JMJ for short) moved in and named the Mariënburg complex as a ‘tribute’ to a medieval Franciscan order. These sisters played a key role in developing education for girls, not just in Den Bosch but far beyond. In 1999, after more than 100 years, the final lessons were taught and the monastery closed its doors. But not for long…

Jheronimus Academy of Data Science

After an extensive renovation that respected its cultural history, the building was given a new purpose. And the best part is that education is being provided here once again. Since 2016, Mariënburg has been home to the first university in Den Bosch: the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science. This university is a collaboration between TU/e and Tilburg University and focuses specifically on academic education in the field of ‘big data’.

In addition to the university, companies focusing on data science have also found a home in the monastery. The campus also features 77 furnished apartments. Hip, vibrant, and trendy – the JMJ sisters could never have imagined it!

Mariënburg Den Bosch Tour

During the tour led by the guides from Kring Vrienden van ‘s-Hertogenbosch, you’ll get a clear picture of monastic life and education in the past. At the same time, you’ll see how the building is now used by the new users and residents of the ‘Mariënburg Campus’ who study, work, and live here under one roof. A unique concept in the Netherlands. Good to know: there are quite a few stairs to climb during this tour.
